Amenities & Accommodations
Be sure to pack your binoculars along with your swimsuit for a stay at this spacious, comfortable home on an outstandingly beautiful and serene beach just north of Kennebunkport.
This house, on undiscovered Hills Beach, fronts directly on Saco Bay, and its short catwalk through the sea grasses leads to a private, child-friendly beach. Directly behind the house stretches the Back Bay, which means that every window in the house has a water view.
Spectacular sunrises and sunsets are commonplace but rarely less than stunning. This is a place where the rhythm of the day is determined not by the clock but by the tides. When the tide is in, break out the binoculars to scan the array of picturesque islands, one with a working lighthouse, one a bird sanctuary with a mysterious tower, another with a cluster of rustic cottages. Lobstermen come and go, and sailboats bob prettily at their moorings at Biddeford Pool. The odd pleasure boat, kayaker, wind surfer or paddleboarder happens by, but there is never noise, never a crowd.
At low tide, the binoculars come in equally handy. Gone is the seascape of hours before, replaced by lots of extensive stretches of sand, usually a scarce commodity in Maine. The sandbars stretch all the way out to two of the islands, beckoning beachcombers, walkers, bird watchers, fly fisherman, and those who just want to wade or swim in the gentle surf that breaks far out "on the bars."
The house itself offers plenty of space and includes a fully equipped kitchen, four bedrooms, two full bathrooms, and off-street parking for up to four vehicles. It has a furnished patio with a gas grill for outdoor entertaining.
When it’s time for someone else to do the cooking, Buffleheads restaurant is a short walk down the beach or visit Goldthwaite’s store and the Pool Lobster Company at elegant Biddeford Pool, just around the other side of the Back Bay. Or drive a bit farther to quaint and effortlessly charming Cape Porpoise to have fish and chips on the dock at the Clam Shack.
For more bustle, visit the famous Kennebunkport, just a few miles farther down the road. It is packed with shops, bars, and restaurants and offers the chance to ogle Walker Point, the Maine home of two presidents named George. Or drive 30 minutes north to Portland’s restored old port area with its ferries and excursion boats that ply Casco Bay.
The area offers lots of opportunities to sightsee, hike, parasail, jet ski and fish, whether from shore or from a charter boat. Nearby amusement and water parks, including venerable Old Orchard Beach across the bay, will appeal to the kids, while adults might want to hit LL Bean and the mass of outlet stores in Freeport. But most people may find that, when the sun is shining, there’s no better place to be than home, when home is this place on the water at Hills Beach.
