I stayed 4 nights in April 2026 and highly recommend it, as long as you have a sene of adventure. Cabs/ubers drop you off at the front gate, so if you are going careless make sure you can carry your luggage about half a mile to the lodging. I knew this ahead of time and used a back pack. It’s a small base so easy enough to find your way around, although in the dark I missed the Gonzales Hall sign and wandered around a bit. You are staying in the same barracks as the Coasties, so there is no reception. Just walk into the building and up to the second floor til you find your room- use the lock box to get in. It is a barracks room but converted to be way cozier than any barracks I was ever in! Nice bedding, plentiful and fluffy pillows, great a/c, and a small fridge/freezer/microwave. View of the ocean as the base sits right on the water- I couldn’t figure out how to get my window open so no fresh air, but I did t spend a lot of time in the room. There is a tiny BX that is open 24/7 and is self check out- perfect for water, drinks, snacks, sunscreen. I am an early riser so ate a 6:15 am breakfast in the galley downstairs- $2.95 for food and yummy coffee and you get to eat with the Coasties! There is also a laundry room and a workout room. And the USO has set up a nice rec room. Best of all the location is a short walk or scooter ride into Old San Juan (about 3 blocks from the front gate). It’s not fancy, but if you are looking for a safe, inexpensive stay in Old San Juan this is it!
