"Perfect Day: Idyllwild, CA
Standing at about a mile high, this woodsy hideout buzzed with backpackers and creatives alike
Driving from L.A., you might be surprised to see pine trees replace the desert scrub as you near the crest of the San Jacinto mountains. It’s also how you’ll know you’re getting close to Idyllwild. Pacific Crest Trail hikers make a stop here to fill up on supplies and then linger for the town’s culture: a film festival, a lively crop of restaurants and bars, local songwriters strumming their guitars, and a dozen-plus galleries. It’s not quite the secret it once was, but it remains a glorious respite, especially on clear days—when you notice you can see all the way to the Pacific from the top of a nearby peak.
